Amila Rajapaksha's Endorsement by Thaw Zin Aye (Youth LEAD) - Commonwealth Youth Council

in

Thaw Zin Aye (Thailand), Regional Coordinator Youth LEAD- Asia Pacific Network of Young Key Affected Population recommending Amila Wensiri Rajapaksha for the Commonwealth Youth Council as the Representative for the Special Interest Group

CYC Representative of Special Interest Groups

in

Asia Pacific is one of the most over populated regions in the world with a 750 million young people between the age group of 15 to 29. This amount equals to 60% of the world youth population and includes marginalized and underrepresented groups ranging from ethnic and religious minorities to young key effected populations living in Asia and Pacific.

Representing unrepresented groups in Asia and Pacific can be the biggest challenge to a Youth Activist from this very important region. Thus, it will be a great challenge for the Commonwealth Youth Council to ensure the participation of underrepresented and marginalized youth groups from the region. My intention is to address the issue of representation and empowerment of these youth constituencies within my future role in Commonwealth Youth Council as a representative of special interest groups.

The main focus of my work would be to provide strong regional leadership in policy advocacy and strategy making for effective representation of the interests of concerned groups. I have strong grass root level back ground which will enable me to understand the needs of marginalized and underrepresented groups accurately. My policy understanding and experience as a member of the Asia Pacific Inter Agency Task Team on Young Key Effected Populations would benefit the work of CYC in engaging and addressing the issues faced by these youth groups. I intend to put my strong interpersonal skills to make a strong liaison for underrepresented youth groups in the region and assist these groups to build their capacity to effective present them self’s. I have gained valuable experience understanding on the needs of urban youth and there issues during my work with UNHABITAT office in NYC and therefore expect to use my excellent interpersonal , communication, planning and analyzing skills in to establish strong coordination between General Assembly and marginalized young people.

One of the main intentions I have is to coordinate and engauge different youth groups in supporting different working committees, the work of the “Vise Chair on Inclusion and Engagement” as well as develop action plans and implement projects to strengthen CYC outreach to special groups. I hope to use my extensive experience as an advisor to Youth Health Right coalition International as well as a regional focal point for Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS and my academic background in Social Works in this regard. I would also intend to bring strong leadership skills to represent the needs of marginalized and underrepresented young people to CYC from my past experience in the Youth Steering Committee of 11th International Conference on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific.
